Ballet gala – Ülo Vilimaa 75

Lea Tormis has said: “Ülo Vilimaa’s productions and his solo performances outside the scope of the theatrical repertoire have become, as if axiomatically, part of a wider sphere of overall artistic phenomena – at the ballet evenings held at the Vanemuine one can see people who do not think much of ballet or who claim “not to understand much” about it.

Vilimaa does not use the skilfully developed language of classical ballet and is, in general, free of the ballet clichés that bother many. His dance creation is often (but not always!) simple in an unsimplified and truly elusive way which channels the intensive emotional and mental radiance from the stage to the audience.”

The fascinating and diverse artist – dancer, choreographer, director and head ballet master of the Vanemuine – Ülo Vilimaa is turning 75! We will restore some numbers using Ülo’s choreography, show films with Ülo himself dancing and welcome guests who come to congratulate the birthday boy! We will be opening an exhibition of Ülo’s paintings in the lobby of the Grand Building of the Vanemuine on 13 March 2016.
