The End
None of us know why we are here in this universe and there is no specific reason why we should be. Yet we are and we are moving along this great cycle called “life”. Although we proceed without any guidelines and invent the art of existence step by step while everything is fragile, unsure and volatile, one thing is certain: one day, it will end. Unmistakably.
In the production process of The End, the participants met people who are familiar with witnessing the last moments of life – bridge builders, if you will: pastoral counsellors, specialists of Holy Scripture and folklore. We wanted to find an answer to the question: “What would be the right way to go?” or, to put it more pedagogically: “How to learn to die?”
What might be the contemporary rituals for crossing over to the place nobody knows anything about and from where nobody ever returns? Should we always look at growing old and leaving this world behind merely with pessimism or might we see something greater and immortal in dying – a hymn to life?
Premiere on 20 January 2024 at the Harbour Theatre
