The Vanemuine Theatre will perform the famous musical Kiss of the Spiderwoman in the Nokia Concert Hall (Tallinn) and in the Grand Building of the Vanemuine (Tartu) with Tanya Mikhailova, Koit Toome and Lauri Liiv in the leading roles.
The music of the Tony-awarded musical Kiss of the Spiderwoman has been written by John Kander, the lyrics by Fred Ebb and the librettist is Terrence McNally.
Kiss of the Spiderwoman was staged in the Vanemuine by Roman Hovenbitzer (Germany), the musical director and conductor is Tarmo Leinatamm, the artist is Walter Perdacher (Austria), the light designer is Palle Palme (Sweden) and the choreographer is Antton Laine (Finland). Two completely opposite people, homosexual display window designer Molina and heterosexual revolutionist Valentin meet in an Argentine prison. Both these initially totally different men who ended up in the same prison cell by chance dream of a different, much better world, and this becomes the basis for their becoming closer.
“In general, the piece describes the day-to-day struggle for human dignity, love and happiness,” said director Roman Hovenbitzer. “It calls for tolerance towards one another and makes the spectators understand what is happening – not simply an episode of distant times and strange continents, but look for parallels here and now.”
In other roles: Siiri Koodres, Karmen Puis, Märt Jakobson, Taisto Noor, Jaan Willem Sibul, Tõnu Kattai, Joosep Trumm, Egon Laanesoo, Rasmus Kull, Tamar Nugis and others. The Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra, male choir, ballet group and a band participate in the musical as well.
The musical is based on a novel by Manuel Puig based on which the author wrote a play in 1983. The musical Kiss of the Spiderwoman has been well received by the audience in the West End in London as well as in Broadway in New York. In 1993 it was awarded a Tony in the category “Best Musical” and received various other Tony awards. In 1985 Argentine/Brazilian director Hector Babenco directed a film bearing the same title.
Various very famous musicals such as Cabaret, Zorbas, Chicago and many others have been staged in cooperation between composer John Kander and lyrics author Fred Ebb.
Roman Hovenbitzer has studied musical theatre directing in the Hamburg Higher Music and Drama School and in the University of Hamburg. Since 1999 he has staged over 40 operas, operettas and musicals as a freelance director in Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Brazil. Last year he staged Kiss of the Spiderwoman in the Schleswig-Holstein Landestheater in Flensburg in Germany.
Koit Toome has played in the Vanemuine’s musical performances Jesus Christ Superstar, West Side Story, Cats and Chess. Lauri Liivi’s list of musicals staged in the Vanemuine is even longer: in addition to the four pieces mentioned he has also played in Evita and Aida. Tanya Mihhailova has sung in the musical concert Memory. Last May she played in the Vanemuine’s concert play Queen – The Doors of Time.
