International Baltic Ballet Festival will be held in Riga between April 12-19 and will present Theatre Vanemuine ballet production "Casanova" that just premiered in Estonia. "Casanova" will be performed on April 12 at 8 pm in the New Hall of the Latvian National Opera. The tickets to the Vanemuine performance in Riga are already sold out.
It is the 16th International Baltic Ballet Festival and the main leader and artistic director is a Latvian prima ballerina and choreographer Lita Beiris. The purpose of the festival is to popularize ballet, thus classical as well as contemporary ballet troupes are invited from all over the world. The aim of the festival is also to promote communication between different troupes, choreographers and dance schools.
"As there are many high-level ballet troupes and artists from all over the world at the festival, we feel great responsibility for our participation, because we don't just represent Vanemuine but Estonian ballet as a whole", said Mare Tommingas, Vanemuine ballet director.
Vanemuine ballet troupe performed the first time at Riga festival in 2004 presenting Mai Murdmaa's ballet production "Tango of Love". Vanemuine continued to perform at the festival almost every year, mostly at the gala concerts. Soloists include Hayley Blackburn, Takuya Sumitomo, Nashua Mironova, Saori Nagata, Ilja Mironov and others.
“Casanova” created by Belgian choreographer David Sonnenbluck is timeless in style and music – it is baroque yet modern. The director himself called the production with the Vanemuine ballet troupe the best of all the "Casanovas" in Europe. The dancers in "Casanova" include Colin Thomas Maggs, Takuya Sumitomo, Ilja Mironov, Nashua Mironova, Mai Kageyama, Hayley Blackburn and the whole Vanemuine ballet troupe.
"Casanova" premiered at Vanemuine Small Building on April 12th and has been well received by the audience and critics alike. Raimo Poom wrote, "Human animalism is released through electrifying dances loaded with different tensions, based on solid yet impetuous choreography./.../ The team worked well and it is not a small thing to say that this played the biggest part in the loud and genuine recognition from the audience."
