The plot of the opera is set in Rome in 1800. The Republic of Rome has been overthrown and a brutal police dictatorship has been established in the town. The central character in the opera is the ruthless power-seeking Baron Scarpia. In parallel one sees the unwinding of the passionate and tragic love story of the artist Mario Cavaradossi and singer Floria Tosca. In addition, there are masterfully expressed impressive scenes; there is spectacular festiveness and even some comedy. Such diversity and boldly colourful contrasts make Tosca a theatrically captivating and forceful drama. Tosca is classified as a veristic opera in which life is depicted as it is in reality.

The opera premiered on 14 January 1900 in the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
