The Vanemuine Theatre production "Purge" reaches the stage of the Finnish National Theatre on January 21 and 22 of the coming year. The performances were invited by Mika Myllyaho, the Artistical Director of the National Theatre, under whose direction the Sofi Oksanen's "Purge" premiered in Finland in 2007. The Vanemuine "Purge" is the play's first production in Estonia and has received vivid feedback among the audience as well as the media, just like the novel by Oksanen. The work's stage version is not the dramatization of the novel though, for in this case the course of things was unusual to the ordinary: at first the play was written and only after that the novel which has brought the author great fame.
"Purge" at the Vanemuine has been directed by director Liisa Smith who has an Estonian background but works in London. Liisa has graduated from the East Anglia University specializing in performing arts and attained the Master's degree from the London Royal Theatre Academy specializing in directing. The play has been translated by Kalju Kruusa, designes made by Marge Martin. In roles: Marje Metsur, Maarja Mitt, Liisa Pulk, Karol Kuntsel, Margus Jaanovits, Maarius Pärn and Tarmo Tagamets.
"The Vanemuine Theatre has given many guest performances in Finland. We have visited Tampere often, Helsinki less. "Purge" performances are the Vanemuine first quest performances in its 141 year-long history at the dignified Finnish National Theatre," said the Vanemuine Drama Director Sven Karja.
"The Vanemuine "Purge" has received broader interest and in addition to the Finnish National Theatre we are discussing also other guest performances outside Estonia. The content of the production is painful and harsh - taking the production to other countries helps local people to understand what happened in our country years ago," added the theatre's General Manager Paavo Nõgene.
Vanemuine is connected to the Artistical Director of the Finnish National Theatre and playwright Mika Myllyaho who invited "Purge" to Helsinki with two more productions that have been written by him and that the Vanemuine is currently playing - these being "Panic" and "Chaos".
