![]() It is considered quite strange that the romantic maestro, Giuseppe Verdi, took any interest in the dark, cruel and grandiose chivalry drama El Trovador which followed the taste in vogue at the time in France. But as the motive of the plot is love and honour, the opera has still stayed true to the traditions of Spanish theatre. The historical background to the Troubadour is the fighting for the throne of Aragon in 1405-1407 and the main characters are two brothers, Manrico and Luna, who hate each other not only as political opponents. As in many other of Verdi’s operas, historical costumes are not the most important aspect of the opera. The opera is about a tragic play of emotions.
In Italian with Estonian subtitles. The premiere on 9 February 2008 in the Great Hall of the Vanemuine. |
