The famous musical by Richard Rodgers premieres on November 27, 2010 at the Vanemuine Grand Building in Tartu.
The production team is lead by Ain Mäeots, music director and conductor is Tarmo Leinatamm, designer is Riina Degtjarenko (Estonian Drama Theatre), costume designer is Gerly Tinn, choreographer is Antton Laine (Finland), light designer is Palle Palmé (Sweden).
The musical's title role is played by Hanna-Liina Võsa or Birgit Õigemeel, for the latter it being the first big musical role. In other roles: Jüri Lumiste or Raivo E. Tamm, Eva Püssa or Siiri Koodres, Maarja Mitt or Liisa Pulk, Karmen Puis or Silvi Vrait, Külliki Saldre or Kais Adlas, Raivo Adlas, Jaan Willem Sibul, Karol Kuntsel or Rasmus Kull and a number of great singing children.
Birgit Õigemeel has been involved in music since she was small - she studied violin at the music school and sang under the guidance of Aarne Saluveer at the Lasteekraan Music Studio. Later she studied at the preparatory class of the Georg Ots Tallinn Music School. Dramatics isn't unfamiliar to Birgit either - in 2007 she graduated from the Tallinn Vanalinna Hariduskolleegium theatre class where she studied acting under the guidance of Lembit Peterson and played the female title role at the diploma production "The Two Gentlemen of Verona". Birgit won the show "Estonian Idol" in 2007.
Hanna-Liina Võsa has already a long career behind her on the stages of Estonia as well as the United States. She has graduated from the American Music and Dramatic Academy. Earlier, Hanna-Liina has played at the Vanemuine musical of "West Side Story" and taken part in the "Memory" concerts. Interesting is the fact that Hanna-Liina found her passion towards musicals in New York where she saw her idol Julie Andrews at the Broadway musical "Victor Victoria". The title role of the Hollywood movie "The Sound of Music" was reputedly played by Julie Andrews.
In Estonia, "The Sound of Music" is brought on stage already for the third time. The story reaches the Vanemuine stage for the first time, though. General Manager Paavo Nõgene said that there are some names in the world of musical classics that cannot be avoided and that make the repertoire of every solid musical theatre decorously colourful. "Such musicals are "Evita", "My Fair Lady" and certainly "The Sound of Music"," explained Nõgene. "Therefore it is the desire of the Vanemuine Theatre to offer the audience a new high-quality stage version of this musical with never-fading melodies. It is also a whole family musical and every generation should see it in theatre."
"The Sound of Music" will be performed in Tartu at the Vanemuine and in Tallinn at the Nokia Concert Hall. The performance is in Estonian with English and Finnish subtitles.
During the period of October 4-24 there is a discount campaign for tickets to "The Sound of Music". Tickets with discounted prices can be purchased to the Tallinn as well as Tartu performances from all ticket sales locations all over Estonia.
