On March 12 at 19 the ballet "Casanova" premieres at the Vanemuine Small Building, the author of the ballet being the Belgian choreographer and director David Sonnenbluck. "Casanova" already premiered a decade ago and has been brought on stage in many countries under the direction of David Sonnenbluck.
In addition to choreography David Sonnenbluck has also created "Casanova's" set design, musical design (Vivaldi, Mozart, Typsi, traditional Arabic music) and costumes (in cooperation with Mare Tommingas). The light design is by Andres Sarv and Imbi Mälk. In roles: Colin Thomas Maggs, Takuya Sumitomo, Ilja Mironov, Nashua Mironova, Mai Kageyama, Hayley Blackburn, the Vanemuine ballet company.
From time to time Casanova's destiny has aroused the desire for beauty in mankind. That scandalous Venetian was not only an adventurer, cheat and freethinker as usually shown but also a poet, memoir writer, philosopher and musician. Emanating from that David Sonnenbluck has created a timeless ballet in style as well as in music – it is baroque and at the same time contemporary.
The destiny of Jacques Casanova was bizarre. Barely becoming an adult, at first, committed himself to a career in church, then to a military career but soon gave these up to live the life many consider as "scandalous". The aristocracy searching for emotional thrills to make their everyday lives more vivid, turned him into an „erotomaniac“. He collected adventures – as if revenging his destiny – answering with passionate emotions to his bad luck. Taking every adventure as if it was his last, he consistently managed to be unfaithful to his object of passion. A man born as nobody became a frequent visitor in the past high society (Louis XV, Voltaire, Rousseau, Mozart...). All that has inspired David Sonnenbluck to create a ballet about the great seducer.
"It is nice to see a ballet of mine in a different country with different dancers. It is a challenge every time – for the dancers as well as for me. Why Casanova? I read the book and the story intrigued me so much that I wanted to make the ballet. Usually I like to do sensual things on stage and Casanova, of course, is sensual, and this material fitted in every aspect. And everybody knows Casanova, at least something about him! For me this piece is a ballet as well as a show. Some parts are technically really difficult but the music and costumes are turning this ballet into a great show too," introduced David Sonnenbluck his production.
David Sonnenbluck has acquired education from Brussels, Flanders, and St. Petersburg. He has danced in various productions in Belgium, France, Italy and elsewhere in the world. David has his own ballet company La Compagnie Ballet David Sonnenbluck. Recently David Sonnenbluck was appointed artistic director and choreographer of the Brussels Ballet.
