An English merchant, Tobias Mill, receives a letter from a rich Canadian merchant, Slook, in which the latter notifies him of his intent to find a wife from Europe and describes what his future wife should be like as regards her looks and nature. Mill decides that he will give his own daughter Fanny to Slook.

Rossini’s music is fresh and full of melody, it is filled with charm and sparkling humour. While he was only 18 when he wrote the opera, he brought original ideas to Italian opera which broke the routines that were dominant there. The Marriage Contract has been played repeatedly on the stages of the world. It premiered on 3 November 1810 in Venice. The premiere on 30 September 2006 in the Small Building of the Vanemuine. |
