The plot of the opera is based on the fight of the two worlds – one is that of the threatening and cruel Queen of the Night and the other of the sunny humanist, wise priest Sarastro.

Rossini’s music is fresh and full of melody, it is filled with charm and sparkling humour. While he was only 18 when he wrote the opera, he brought original ideas to Italian opera which broke the routines that were dominant there. The Marriage Contract has been played repeatedly on the stages of the world. It premiered on 3 November 1810 in Venice. The premiere on 1 October 2005 in the Grand Building of the Vanemuine.
