Vanemuine new musical director and principal conductor Paul Mägi starts his work on the 1st of September 2011.
Paul Mägi's career as a conductor started in the middle of 1970's. In 1974 he founded a chamber orchestra that four years later developed into an Estonian Radio Chamber Orchestra and for which he worked as artistic director and principal conductor. Between 1978 and 1984 he worked as a conductor for the Estonian Television and Estonian Radio Variety Orchestra and in 1980 founded the Estonian Radio Big Band. In the Estonia Theatre he worked in 1984 as a conductor and in 1995-2002 as a creative director and a principal conductor. In 1990 Paul Mägi became the artistic director and principal conductor of Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. From year 2004 he works as the artistic director and principal conductor of Uppsala Chamber Orchestra. Paul Mägi is also an acknowledged jazz violinist and has performed with London BBC Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Paul Mägi's debut as the Vanemuine principal director will be at the opening concert of the Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra on the 9th of September at 7 PM at the Vanemuine Concert Hall, on the 10th of September at 7 PM at Jõhvi Concert Hall and on September 11th at 6 PM at Kaarli Church in Tallinn.
