![]() Vassili Medvedjev is probably a familiar name for the ballet audience of the Vanemuine of many years. In the 1980s he staged many different productions in Tartu – Benefiss /Fundraiser/, Tantsu Sünd /The Birth of Dance/, Satanilla or Love and Hell, The Prince of the Pagodas and many others. Onegin is based on the verse-format novel of the same name by Russian literature classic Aleksandr Pushkin.
Sisters Tatiana and Olga are waiting for Olga’s beloved Lensky and his friend Onegin. Tatiana, who is only 17 years old, falls in love with Onegin, who is older than she is, and in the hot gust of passion she writes him a letter revealing her feelings. Onegin rejects the girl’s declaration of love gently, but firmly. He instead gives his attention to Olga and, by doing that, insults Lensky’s honour. In the duel that follows, Onegin kills Lensky and repenting his sin, retreats from social life. Years later he returns and meets the now grown-up, elegant and married Tatiana and falls head over heels in love with her. Onegin professes his love to her passionately, but it is too late – the woman admits that she still loves him, but she will remain true to his wedded husband.
The premiere on 10 November 2007 in the Grand Building of the Vanemuine. Production gallery: |
