Musical "Mary Poppins" opens at Vanemuine

This musical is based on P. L. Travers' books titled "Mary Poppins" and Walt Disney's 1964 film by the same name. Original music and song lyrics are written by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman, libretto by Julian Fellowes. The new songs and lyrics have been written by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe in collaboration with Cameron Mackintosh. Translated into Estonian by Leelo Tungal and Anna-Magdaleena Kangro.

The musical is directed by Georg Malvius (Sweden), musical director and conductor is Tarmo Leinatamm, conductor Lauri Sirp, choreographer Cedric Lee Bradley (USA), decorations by Iir Hermeliin (Tallinn City Theatre), costume design by Ellen Cairns (Scotland), lighting design by Palle Palmé (Sweden) and sound design by Tom Saetre (Norway).

The cast includes Hanna-Liina Võsa or Nele-Liis Vaiksoo, Andres Mähar or Karol Kuntsel, Merle Jalakas or Eve Kivisaar, Hannes Kaljujärv or Veikko Täär, Külliki Saldre or Merle Jääger, Lauri Liiv or Simo Breede, Erkki Rebane, Raivo Adlas, Jaan Willem Sibul, Karmen Puis, Siiri Koodres, Katrin Kapinus, Valentina Kremen, Kristiina Raahel Uiga, Laura Danilas, Karoliine Pärlin, Kaspar Kiisk, Mihkel Känd, Alger Ahuna and others.The production also includes Vanemuine Symphony Orchestra, Opera Choir, Ballet Troupe and the band.

The production "Mary Poppins" with Walt Disney's film music has been staged in Estonia before but Disney's and Cameron Mackintosh's version of this musical reaches the Estonian stages the first time.

Vanemuine Theatre has worked more than 5 years to receive the rights to stage the production – it is the newest top musical that reaches an Estonian stage in such a short time. The production period has indeed been very strictly controlled by Disney as by Cameron Mackintosh company, but we have passed all the "tests" and we hope that Mary Poppins will stay to gladden our audience for a long time," said the theatre manager Paavo Nõgene.

The premiere of "Mary Poppins" in Tartu will be visited by Mr. Richard Salfas who as the vice president of one of the biggest license companies Music Theatre International is responsible for the international licenses.

In addition to Tartu "Mary Poppins" will also be played in Tallinn, it premieres at Nokia Concert Hall on December 9 at 1 P.M. and 7 P.M.. The performances will be in Estonian with English and Finnish subtitles.
