After the wedding Pinkerton leaves to perform his duties. Butterfly stays behind and waits for him in Nagasaki. The heart of this loving Japanese woman, Cho-cho-san, breaks and she puts an end to her life.

The drama version of Madame Butterfly premiered with great success in 1900 in New York. This success spread over the Atlantic Ocean to Europe and the premiere of Puccini’s opera took place in 1904 in La Scala Opera Theatre.

“Anyone who tries even a little will cry – this story painted in music a hundred years ago is cruelly moving.”
Mart Sander, Eesti Ekspress

“The Butterfly by Gailitis does not attempt to overwrite canons or amaze unexpectedly. The Latvian seems to believe in the power of the material in hand – in the music of Giacomo Puccini and the libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica.”
Alvar Loog, Postimees

In Italian with Estonian subtitles.

Premiere on September 24, 2004 at the Vanemuine Small Building.
