![]() The light-hearted and optimistic village atmosphere of the first act is contrasted to the mysterious and dramatic atmosphere of the second act in which Wilis – the spirits of girls who died before their wedding night and from whose ritual dances no living soul can escape alive – are predominant in a forest covered with a misty veil. Atonement can only be brought about by the love that conquers all.
With the premiere of Giselle in 1841 in the Paris Opera Theatre, romantic ballet achieved its most perfect and complex form. Because of its diversity of dances and dramatic nuances it is one of the most challenging ballets both for the soloists and for the corps de ballet.
