The title match of the World Chess Championship is held in Merano where the Russian Anatoli Sergejevsky and the American Frederick Trumper fight for the title.

Both have arrived with a retinue: the Russian has the employees of the Soviet embassy, the American has his girlfriend Florence Vassy who has fled Hungary. To the disappointment of the American with an impossible nature, the Russian chess player and Florence become friends, the American loses control and loses the match. Anatoli on the other hand also defends his title in Bangkok. The chess players become pawns in the arena of political games.
Chess premiered in Prince Edward Theatre, in London in 1986, where it was played 1209 times.
In Estonia this musical has been performed in a concert version.
