The "favourite Irishman" of the Estonian theatre Martin McDonagh's plays start the second round in our Land of Mary: his play "The Beauty Queen of the Mountains" that premiered in Vanemuine in 1999 was just staged in Rakvere by the name "The Beauty of Leenane". Having rocketed to the sky of drama classics of the world Mc Donagh (born 1970) still has enough spunk to produce new texts. His newest play (2010) titled "A Behanding in Spokane" was the drama writer's first ever play that premiered on Broadway. The critics claim that it is "the good old" McDonagh in the best sense. From one side tension and twists, colourful characters, fascinating mixture of humour and horror, and from the other hand a good amount of brain tease for the theoretics: myths, fictions, curious bubbling of the unconscious. As the story told on the stage has many unexpected turns, let's just leave it with the starting point of the story: Carmichael, a man of rough impression, has lost his left hand because of a misfortunate occasion in childhood and he has been spending all his following life searching for that missing part of his body. And now, having ended up in a cheap motel room, an odd couple offers a deal, claiming that they are the very people who possess the hand so long searched for.
Premiere on November 18, 2011 at the Harbour Theatre.
